Highly Accomplished and Lead Teachers are certified through a national process applied by the certifying authorities in each participating state/territory. To ensure national consistency, rigor and quality, certifying authorities certify teachers against the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers, using a national process and quality assurance measures.
National certification is portable, allowing teachers to maintain their status as a Highly Accomplished or Lead teacher as they move between participating states/territories and sectors. This does not mean that any industrial arrangements attached to certification, such as a particular rate of pay, or other recognition, such as registration/accreditation status and automatically transferrable. The way in which certified teachers are recognised or rewarded is an employment matter.
As the Certifying Authority of the Northern Territory, The Teacher Registration Board of the Northern Territory (TRBNT) is responsible for implementing and managing the national certification process in this jurisdiction. TRBNT recognises portability of certified teachers across Australia.
